Nicola J –
A very informative book. However, the scope of the text is broad, very generalising in nature. To be expected from a book that covers a wealth of information.

Just what I wanted for inspiration .

The first thing I noticed about it was just how nice of a book it is. I bought it to get some sense of construction of ancient and pre-renaissance furniture, but hung around because the writing is so good. Academic and authoritative, but not dry if you are into the subject.
If you want to understand more about the history of furniture and get a sense of proportion and line aside from the generic “This… is ‘Empire’ This… is ‘Biedermeier’… This… is called ‘Louis XIV” then this book is for you. The author walks you through the eras and epochs of furniture with lots of historic and aesthetic detail.
It is weighty in every sense, but written in such a clean crisp style that I couldn’t put it down.
If you are a designer, woodworker, decorator, or just want something cool for your coffee table, this is it.
The ONLY complaint I have (and it is a petty one) is that the stool detail on the cover isn’t shown in its entirety anywhere in the book. You will have to do a bit of a deep-search on google images to see it. It is part of the collection at the Villa Stuck in Munich, by Franz Stuck. So there you go – the whole collection there is great.

If you are interested in historical furniture you MUST have this book. Very detailed and many lovely photos of rare objects.

This, and Lucie-Smith’s concise history, seem to have the best combination of text and imagery for overviews of this subject. Morley’s style is entertaining, if not occasionally opinionated. This gets pulled of the shelf to reference about as often as Lucie-Smith’s work, which is to say more than any other encyclopedic volume on the shelves.
