Sunny Sewing Honeybee –
I’ve used chalk paint before for various projects. It’s so nice how you can use it without having to treat a previous finish on whatever you’re working on. In my opinion, this paint doesn’t feel, look, or work like chalk paint. For lack of a better way to figure out how to explain it, it almost seems like the chalk part of it–obviously not really chalk, but the active ingredient, I guess I would say–it seems like that was left out of the paint.
This paint doesn’t even work as I would expect a nice acrylic craft paint to work. It’s very thin, and it doesn’t cover the project. It also says to sand between coats, which takes away the convenience of chalk paint–and I’ll admit is not something I did.
I tried various surfaces to see if it would work. I tried it on a sealed box with no luck, I tried it on a painted chair with no luck, and I even tried it on a piece of unfinished wood (or perhaps just very lightly sealed), just to see how it would work with one of the most ideal conditions possible. That wood had some dark print on it so I could check coverage. After three or four coats, the wood still looked unpainted. That’s the opposite of chalk paint, which has really good, thick coverage.
What I ultimately decided to use it on was a small crate, which had a dark stain and was sealed, but not glossy. I did two to four coats (in various areas, before giving up), and again was shocked at the poor coverage. Four coats weren’t enough, and it didn’t go on a nice, smooth way like a chalk paint would. I don’t know how many coats it would have taken to finally get a solid paint color. In order to try to save my little crate, I tried to wash off some of the paint, sand off some of the paint, and went for a really distressed look. It is now very distressed, in order to camouflage how poorly the paint went on. I liked the before crate better than the after crate.
Unfortunately, I don’t think you could do a solid chalk paint surface with this, at least with the formula of the one I have.
This is just a really strange paint. It seems like it’s missing the ingredient that makes chalk paint thick and chalky, with good coverage ability, like typical chalk paint. Unless the run that I got is somehow a mistake and they left ingredients out, I wouldn’t call this chalk paint.

There is no coverage, I was excited to try something new, but omg I can’t even remember how many coats I needed and still it wasn’t enough.
